Padma Bridge Paragraph
The Padma Bridge, Bangladesh’s longest and most ambitious infrastructure project, represents a significant achievement in the country’s engineering and economic history.
Spanning 6.15 kilometers across the Padma River, this dual-purpose bridge is designed to support both road and rail transport, connecting the southwestern regions to the capital and beyond.
Initiated in December 2014 by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited, the bridge was completed in May 2022 and inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the following month.
Built at a cost of US$3.868 billion, the bridge will require Bangladesh to overcome financial setbacks, including the withdrawal of an initial loan from the World Bank, before it can move towards self-financing.
Beyond the economic constraints, the construction faced unique environmental challenges posed by the river’s seasonal changes. Divided into six construction phases, the project not only provides vital connectivity but also fosters regional growth, access to healthcare, and educational resources.
Today, the Padma Bridge is a symbol of resilience and progress, driving progress in trade, tourism, and industrial development across the country.
